New Solutions for "Optics Design and Simulation"

This spring, Nanoscribe hosted the one-day meeting of the innovation networks Photonics BW and Bayern Photonics. We provided the members of their shared working group “Optics Design and Simulation” a professional platform to exchange ideas and experiences. Amongst others, Prof. Harald Giessen from the University of Stuttgart presented his brand-new results in the fields of 3D printed micro-optics based on the recently published paper* “Spatial beam intensity shaping using phase masks on single-mode optical fibers fabricated by femtosecond direct laser writing. He demonstrated the applicability of two-photon polymerization for the direct-fabrication of 3D micro-optical components.

This excellent scientific contribution was completed by the latest results of Nanoscribe's expert in micro-optics, Dr. Yann Tanguy. He presented the possibilities of improved fabrication of refractive micro-optics by direct laser writing and demonstrated that two-photon polymerization is the key solution to fabricate micro-optics that overcome design limitations of (grey scale) lithography as well as diamond machining. Close collaborations with partners from academia and industry have generated technological advancements that demonstrate Nanoscribe’s 3D printers as versatile tools to drive innovation within the field of optics and photonics. Users benefit from fast and flexible design iterations as well as from the outstanding freedom of design.

The attendees agreed, that micro-optics is the enabling technology for many state-of-the art products and forms the basis for future technological developments in many different industries like consumer electronics, health care and life sciences, the automotive industry or robotics. They were impressed by the capabilities of 3D printing in the field of micro-optics with regard to resolution and precision and were convinced that direct manufacturing of micro-optics or master fabrication for mass replication could have the potential to innovate established process chains in the micro-optics industry.

The innovation networks Photonics BW and Bayern Photonics promote optical technologies in research, development and application, training and public relations in the federal states Baden-Württemberg and Bayern (Germany).
