On-Chip Integration of Photonic Devices by Additive Manufacturing

The miniaturization of optical components and full integration of photonic devices facilitate applications in optical communication, medical imaging, environmental sensing and autonomous driving. In each use case, photonic integrated systems require on-chip individual or compound components as well as interfaces. Nanoscribe’s 3D printers offer design freedom, submicron resolution and optical quality surfaces required for on-chip fabrication of optics and photonics.

Photonic waveguides, couplers, disk resonators and advanced micro-optics are some of the functional parts that are 3D printed directly on chip. For example, short-distance chip-to-chip interconnects are developed on the basis of 3D printed photonic waveguides – also called photonic wire bonds. These single-mode interconnects allow for low-loss optical signal processing at high data rates.

Even advanced micro-optics such as stacked lenses are used for direct fabrication on chip. They are produced in one single printing step and without the need to assemble individual parts.
